What is hyperhidrosis?
Hyperhidrosis, also known as excessive sweating, is a condition that affects approximately 3% of the population. It’s most common in the armpits, but can be found in several places on the body, e.g. the hands and feet or a combination of all three areas. Those who suffer from hyperhidrosis commonly spend a lot of time hiding the sweat. Some people bring extra clothes to school or work and change often, only dress in certain colours, or wear a double layer to hide sweat stains.

In those with palmar hyperhidrosis (sweaty palms), it can be very bothersome to shake hands or touch someone. This can cause social distress and embarrassment that affects quality of life and emotional health.

How is hyperhidrosis treated with Botox / what areas can be treated?
Fortunately for sufferers of this condition, botulinum toxin type A (Botox) is very effective in treating any areas of the body where you might be experiencing excessive sweat. Botox is injected into the skin of the area in question and makes it impossible for nerve signals to reach the sweat glands. The result is temporary local cessation of sweating that will be apparent 3-4 days later. The most common treatment areas include the armpits, hands, feet, head, and groin. How is a treatment with Botox done? Treatment is generally performed without anaesthesia as we employ the use of extremely thin needeles (diameter of 0.2 mm) and the injections are not perceived as painful by patients. If a local anaesthetic is desired, you can request this and a numbing cream will be applied to the area. Depending on the area to be treated, the entire procedure takes around 20-30 minutes.

What results can I expect?
In about 3-4 days, your treated areas will be dry! How long the effect lasts varies a bit from person to person, but you can expect anywhere from 3-12 months with 4-6 months being most common. The way Botox works is that you will need fewer and fewer treatments the longer time goes on.

How many treatments should I have?

Since the duration of effect lasts around 4-6 months, you will need a top off 2-3 times a year.

What happens after treatment with Botox?  Any side effects?
Botox is tolerated very well by most people. Only a few cases of allergic reaction have been reported, and these are extremely rare. Any side effects can be seen in the form of small mosquito bite-like dots in the injection area, but these are transient and will disappear in an hour.

What should I do after a Botox treatment for excessive sweating?
Relax and start planning your new wardrobe! Am I a candidate for Botox? The vast majority of people are good candidates for this sort of treatment.
